Hand Smocked

will you sit round the fire to hear one of grandma’s poetic tales? c/c?
obviously this isn’t exactly what she said cos’ she wouldn’t say it in rhyme, but i got the gist of it down here, enjoy
♥astoria♥
“now settle down children
and cast your minds
into the pond of the past”
when we heard her recall
we gathered round fast
eyes on the grand woman before me
the cake in my hand, unbitten
“lucky for the cake dear sweet,
for when i was your age
we had next to none to eat”
“stale bread for our midday lunch
if fortune was on our side
we’d even have a small side of butter”
yarn like this made me grateful
for even my most worthless of clutter
“i see all of you dressed in
orange, yellow, pink and blue
but i was clothed in brown and grey
wearing those papery smocks
through every differing day”
moaning to her feet
her chair used as support
us kids in a rare hush
i looked to my hands
my cake had turned to mush
All children need to be aware of how things were years ago. We have just taken our Gchildren to a museum of Victorian times, up to present day. There were some old tv sets, dating c1950’s. The 10 year old asked where the remote control was! I used to love listening to my Nans and Grandads recalling how things had been in their childhood. Made me feel very grateful. Stories and poems like this need to be passed down the line.
