There are numerous types of RG59 coaxial cables engineered to support different video applications. These applications may include installing cable in a plenum rated ceiling, a high rise building, or even having an application where the cable needs to be buried underground. Whatever the application you can be assured there is a RG59 coaxial cable type to support it. RG59 coaxial cable is the most commonly used cable in CCTV camera installations. Used as a CCTV cord it carries the surveillance video signal from the security camera back to the DVR for viewing, play back, and downloading.
The 3 most common ratings you will see on RG59 coaxial cords are UL, CM, CMR, and CMP. It is highly recommended that you only coaxial cable that has the correct ratings on the cable that fit the application you are using it for. The CM rating on cable means it is rated for general building wiring. This means it can be used for residential or small commercial video applications. A CM rated cable meets the minimum requirement in commercial installations. The CMR rating means the cable is rated for riser applications. The “R” in CMR stands for Riser, and means the cable is permitted for use in multiple level buildings. CMR rated cables are required when running cables between floors through open vertical shafts. CMR rated cables are suitable for vertical shafts not defined as an environmental air plenum spaces. A CMP rating signifies the wire has passed stringent burn testing and is suitable for installation into Air Plenum spaces. Cables meeting type CMP requirements are suitable for installation in ducts and plenum ceilings without the use of conduit. These cables are designed with a special jacket that offers the lowest fire resistance, and low-smoke and toxin producing characteristics. The ‘P’ in CMP is for Plenum. The final rating that is most common on cables is a UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rating. The UL rating insures the cable meet nationally recognized safety requirements as well as industry specifications for performance and quality.
RG59 cords that do not have any ratings on them usually means that they are not tested in accordance with any standards. These types could be dangerous. These cables could also cause harm to equipment or even cause a fire, which could create a danger to the public. It is recommended that all cables used have their ratings clearly documented on the cable jacket. It is also recommended that you always follow your local building codes when installing all wire and cable types.
A quality RG59 coaxial cable has nothing to do with price or brand. It is the materials used in the internal construction, the specifications, and the ratings that really count. Another huge factor in ensuring a successful CCTV system installation is making sure you pick the right cable for your application. All the specification characteristics of your CCTV cable will clearly define if it is of quality or not. Installing CCTV cable is a lot of work. So make sure the cable you pick it the right one for the job!
